The Women Judges Association of Malawi (WOJAM) on Monday 10th March 2025 commenced celebrations for the International Day of Women Judges under the theme “Women in Justice and Women for Justice.”
On the first day, 108 female students from Mzuzu Government were at the High Court, Mzuzu Registry where they had sessions with Justices Thomson Ligowe and Justus Kishindo. On the same day, students from Falls Community Day Secondary School and Access Schools interacted with Justices Fiona Mwale, Violet Chipao and Madalitso Chimwaza.
On Friday, 14th March 2025, students from Njamba, Blantyre, Chichiri, Bangwe, HHI, Lady Bird Secondary Schools, and Amazing Grace Academy visited the Principal Registry, where they interacted with Justice of Appeal Dorothy nyaKaunda Kamanga, Justices Michael Tembo, Jabbar Alide, Jack N’riva, Chimbizgani Kacheche, Jean Kayira, Etness Chanza and Edna Bodole. In Zomba students were also inspired by Judge Zione Ntaba, Assistant Registrars Hellen Kachala and Lisa Chingoli.
These were unprecedented celebrations, where 454 students were inspired to become Lawyers and Judges. International Day of Women Judges is celebrated on 10th March each year to recognize the contributions of women judges worldwide. This is part of global effort to ensuring gender equality and to address gender-related judicial integrity issues. It also aims to incorporate women’s representation issues into judicial systems.
