𝗦𝗨𝗣𝗥𝗘𝗠𝗘 𝗖𝗢𝗨𝗥𝗧 𝗢𝗙 𝗠𝗔𝗟𝗔𝗪𝗜 𝗦𝗘𝗧𝗦 𝗔𝗦𝗜𝗗𝗘 𝗛𝗜𝗚𝗛 𝗖𝗢𝗨𝗥𝗧 𝗥𝗨𝗟𝗜𝗡𝗚, 𝗨𝗣𝗛𝗢𝗟𝗗𝗦 𝗨𝗦𝗗𝟮𝟲𝟵,𝟵𝟳𝟬.𝟬𝟬 𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗙𝗘𝗜𝗧𝗨𝗥𝗘 𝗢𝗥𝗗𝗘𝗥

The Supreme Court of Appeal sat today for a Criminal Appeal Hearing in the matter between the Republic and Muhammad Jawad.

The matter stems from 2015 when the respondent was arrested at Chileka International Airport while attempting to leave Malawi with USD269,970 without the required authorisation. He was convicted and fined by the Senior Resident Magistrate. The Senior Resident Magistrate also ordered forfeiture of the entire amount, but the High Court later ordered that the money be returned to the respondent after an appeal.

The Supreme Court has set aside the High Court Ruling and upheld the USD269,970 forfeiture order.
