Commercial Court To Have a New Building in Lilongwe

The High Court Commercial Division will have a new building to be constructed in Lilongwe. This was disclosed during the meeting of stakeholders conducted at Sunbird Livingstonia Beach in Salima on 8th of April, 2022 which had delegates from the Malawi Judiciary and the Department of Buildings under the Ministry of Transport and Public Works.

In his opening remarks the Judge President for Commercial Division, Hon. Justice Dr. Mtambo stated that Lilongwe and other urban centres in the central region are experiencing a boom in the economic activities which are also bringing in a lot of business disputes requiring commercial court litigation. He went on to say that currently the Commercial Court proceedings n Lilongwe are held in a rented building which is not a purpose built court building. The meeting was aimed at coming up with a concept note for the project. This new court structure will be constructed at the City Centre on Plot No. 19/46 behind the Lilongwe Civic Centre Offices next to Tikwere House. Currently, the Division has another structure under construction in Blantyre next to the Treasury Cashiers’ Office along the Sanjika road which is almost 95% complete. Among the delegates to the meeting were the Judges of Commercial Court from Lilongwe and Blantyre Registries, the acting Registrar of the Supreme Court of Appeal and High Court of Malawi, the Chief Courts’ Administrator and the Director of Buildings in the Ministry of Transport and Public Works
