AFBA to confer Medal of Merit Leadership on Malawi Supreme Court of Appeal

African Bar Association (AfBA) is a professional body of individual lawyers and national law societies or bar associations in Africa. It was established in 1971 and its headquarters is in Abuja, Nigeria.

Amongst its objectives are; encouraging adherence to the rule of law and the independence of the judiciary in all member states and continent at large, and maintaining the honour and integrity of the legal profession through the promotion of the highest standards of professional ethics.

Next week, from 6th to 10th August, 2023 AfBA is scheduled to hold its 2023 annual conference at the University of South Africa (UNISA) in Pretoria, South Africa. The special guest of honour will be the President of the Republic of South Africa, His Excellency Cyril Ramaphosa.

The governing council of AfBA at its meeting held in Algiers, Algeria took a unanimous decision to confer the 2023 Medal of Merit in Leadership on the Supreme Court of Appeal for Malawi. This is in recognition of the role our highest court has played and continues to play in the promotion of the rule of law, judicial independence and separation of powers in Africa.

The Honourable the Chief Justice, Rizine Robert Mzikamanda, SC will attend the AfBA’s annual conference in order to receive the medal on behalf of the Supreme Court of Appeal Bench. Apart from receiving the medal, Chief Justice Mzikamanda will also be expected to make a presentation to the over 1,500 delegates that will converge in Pretoria.

This medal is the second to be conferred on the Malawi Judiciary. In 2022, five High Court of Malawi judges who presided over the presidential election case were also conferred a similar medal by the Chatham House in London.

These medals are a huge motivation to the Malawi judiciary that continues to strive to do its best in the face of so many challenges rocking it.
