Statement by Honourable Chief Justice Andrew K.C. Nyirenda, SC on the Passing on of Honourable Chief Justice Lovemore G. Munlo, SC (Retired)

Honourable Chief Justice Lovemore G. Munlo, SC (Retired)

I have learnt with shock and profound sadness of the death of His Lordship Chief Justice Lovemore G. Munlo, SC (Retired) who passed on at Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre on 19th August 2021.

Chief Justice Munlo, SC (Retired) had a long and illustrious career prior to his appointment as Chief Justice of Malawi in May 2008. He served, with remarkable distinction, in various high profile positions both nationally and internationally.

Chief Justice Munlo, SC (Retired), was a fearless and ardent defender of the Rule of Law whose exceptional values inspired many among us. He was a decisive and practical leader. The Nation, at large, and the Judiciary of Malawi, in particular, owe him a deep sense of gratitude for the manner in which he selflessly and diligently committed himself to raising the profile of our Judiciary. He goes as a friend, wonderful colleague and a truly fallen hero. Our nation has lost a true and distinguished son of the soil.

We at the Judiciary of Malawi will miss him as an inspiring colleague and as a deeply caring professional who radiated courtesy, humility and kindness. We feel honoured to have had the opportunity to associate with Chief Justice Munlo SC, (Retired) over the years. He leaves behind a measureless and tremendous legacy of public service.

With a heavy heart, the Judiciary of Malawi extends sincerest and deepest condolences to Chief Justice Munlo’s immediate and extended family and the Nation for the overwhelming and heartbreaking loss.

May His Soul Rest in Eternal Peace
ANDREW K. C. NYIRENDA, SC
CHIEF JUSTICE
