In a response to the President’s call for the communities/institutions to work together with government in restoring the environment in order to deal with climate change and minimize its impact, the Honourable the Chief Justice presided over the launch of tree planting season at Balaka Magistrate court. Soon after the launch, the Honourable the Chief Justice planted a M’bawa tree and oversaw planting of 400 acacia seedlings within Balaka court premises. The event was participated by Supreme Court Judges, High Court Judges, Registrars, Members of staff of the Judiciary, officers from various government institutions which included the Police, District Council, Forest Department and Education. Speeking on behalf of the District Commissioner, District Planning Officer for Balaka District thanked the Honourable Chief Justice and the entire management of the Judiciary for choosing Balaka district to be the venue for the launch. He indicated that the district has 2% covered by forestry instead of the recommended 20%. He lamented that deforestation is high in Balaka district due to the charcoal industry.
